Survey Methodology and Scope

We surveyed over 500 UK individuals with investable assets above £1 million. All participants had prior exposure to early-stage schemes. Our aim was to:

  • Identify allocations to SEIS versus EIS.
  • Pinpoint favourite industry sectors.
  • Uncover decision drivers such as tax relief or governance.
  • Explore platform preferences, especially digital marketplaces.

The data was gathered in Q1 2024. Respondents came from London, Manchester, Edinburgh and across the UK. High net worth attitudes can vary by region. This survey highlights nationwide trends while noting local nuances.

Key Findings on SEIS and EIS Allocation

1. SEIS vs EIS: Balancing Risk and Reward

Many high net worth investors view SEIS as the “starter” scheme. It offers up to 50% Income Tax relief on investments up to £100,000 per tax year. But the 42.5% Capital Gains Tax exemption on future gains makes EIS strong too. Our survey shows:

  • 62% allocate more than 20% of their startup capital to EIS.
  • 48% still favour SEIS for seed-stage risk appetite.
  • 30% split evenly between both schemes for diversification.

Risk-takers lean into SEIS for early entry valuations. Others prefer EIS’s higher investment cap and additional CGT relief. The choice depends on appetite and time horizon.

2. Sector Preferences: Tech, Green and Health Lead

When it comes to sectors, high net worth individuals are clear:

  • Technology startups draw 58% of allocations.
  • Sustainable energy and cleantech get 35%.
  • Healthtech and biotech attract 29%.
  • Fintech and professional services trail with 22% and 18%.

The tech rush isn’t new. But growing ESG awareness pushes more funds towards green energy and impact ventures. Health remains strong as investors seek exposure to medical innovation.

3. Decision Drivers: Beyond Tax Relief

Tax incentives matter. But our respondents emphasised other factors:

  • Founder track record (72%).
  • Sector expertise (65%).
  • Quality of due diligence (54%).
  • Ease of platform use (48%).

A platform with robust vetting and clear documentation boosts investor confidence. Many high net worth individuals favour curated marketplaces for streamlined access to deals and compliance checks.

4. Digital Platforms: The New Standard

Digital investment hubs are on the rise. 67% of our high net worth investors prefer online marketplaces to manual deals. Benefits include:

  • Centralised opportunity listings.
  • Automated eligibility checks.
  • In-platform document management.

These trends indicate growing comfort with digital channels. Traditional networks still matter, but platforms offering intuitive workflows are winning hearts.

Targeting the Right Investors

High net worth individuals are selective. Network through industry events and digital channels. Tailor your approach:

  • Tech founders emphasise innovation metrics.
  • Green energy startups showcase ESG impact.
  • Health ventures present trial results or partnerships.
