Essential Adviser Training: SEIS and EIS Tax Relief Certification for Wealth Managers

A Smart Start for High Net Worth Advisers

Working with high net worth clients isn’t just about numbers. It’s about trust, insights and the skill to navigate complex tax rules. SEIS and EIS are goldmines for startup funding. Advisors who master these schemes stand out. They deliver bigger savings, better returns and a seamless experience.

Wondering where to begin? This guide walks you through the must-have training for wealth managers. You’ll learn how to get certified, how to apply your knowledge on Oriel IPO and why it matters for every affluent portfolio. Ready to see how it all fits? Revolutionising investment opportunities in the UK for high net worth investors

Why SEIS and EIS Expertise Matters for High Net Worth Advisers

You’ve heard of SEIS and EIS. But do you truly grasp the pitfalls, deadlines and eligibility quirks? One misstep and you could jeopardise a client’s tax relief. For someone with a high net worth, errors aren’t just costly, they can erode confidence.

Advisers armed with a formal SEIS and EIS Tax Relief Certification gain several advantages:

  • Instant credibility with affluent individuals.
  • Clarity on HMRC guidelines, case law and compliance checks.
  • Confidence to spot unsuitable investments early.
  • A structured process to onboard new opportunities, quickly.

It’s more than theory. Certification proves you’ve studied the mechanics, passed rigorous assessments and can guide clients through due diligence. That means fewer surprises—and happier, loyal clients.

Decoding SEIS Tax Relief

SEIS (Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme) is a flagship for angel-backed startups. If you’re advising high net worth investors, understanding SEIS is non-negotiable.

Who Qualifies for SEIS?

Not every business makes the cut. The key criteria include:

  • Must be an early-stage, UK-based company.
  • Fewer than 25 employees.
  • Gross assets under £350,000.
  • A genuine trading activity, not property or investment vehicles.

Key SEIS Benefits

  • Income tax relief of 50% on investments up to £100,000 per tax year.
  • Capital gains reinvestment relief.
  • Loss relief if a startup fails.
  • No minimum holding period beyond three years.

With this clarity, you can structure proposals that maximise relief—and shield clients from pitfalls during compliance reviews. Ready to dive deeper? Explore SEIS opportunities

Unlocking EIS Benefits

EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme) caters to slightly more mature startups. It’s often the next step for companies that outgrow SEIS thresholds. For the high net worth clientele, EIS offers further tax efficiency.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for EIS, companies must:

  • Employ fewer than 250 people.
  • Have gross assets of £15 million or less.
  • Be unquoted or on AIM.
  • Operate in qualifying trades, avoiding sectors like property development.

Advanced Tax Reliefs

  • 30% income tax relief on investments up to £1 million (or £2 million if half is in knowledge-intensive companies).
  • Capital gains deferral relief.
  • Loss relief at individual’s marginal rate.
  • Inheritance Tax relief after a two-year holding period.

You’ll spot where SEIS ends and EIS begins. That seamless handover keeps high net worth clients invested, tax-efficient and on the right side of HMRC rules. Learn about EIS tax relief

Essential Elements of SEIS/EIS Certification

Most training courses claim to cover SEIS/EIS. But the top programmes share these core modules:

  • Scheme Mechanics: Detailed breakdown of SEIS and EIS rules, updates and HMRC interpretations.
  • Due Diligence: Analysing company documents, financials and audit requirements.
  • Investor Suitability: Assessing risk profiles for high net worth clients, factoring in portfolio allocation.
  • Compliance & Reporting: Preparing advance assurance applications, completing SEIS/EIS3 forms and post-investment reporting.
  • Ethics & Professional Standards: Avoiding conflicts of interest, maintaining firm-wide disclosures.

Got that foundation? You’ll pass exams and earn a certificate that speaks volumes. It’s not just a badge—it’s a roadmap to grow your advisory practice. Join the revolution in investment opportunities for high net worth clients

Empowering Your Advisory Practice

Once certified, you can:

  • Highlight SEIS/EIS specialisms on your website and pitches.
  • Host webinars or client workshops on startup-based tax planning.
  • Partner with accountants to bundle advisory and tax filings.
  • Offer tailored portfolios blending SEIS, EIS and traditional asset classes.

The benefits for your firm:

  • New revenue streams through subscription models or retainer fees.
  • Stronger client retention by delivering unique value.
  • A clear USP against generalist advisers.
