Government-Backed Funding for UK Startups: Maximising SEIS and EIS Tax Relief

Introduction: Your Guide to Government-Backed Startup Funding

Starting a business in the UK often means wrestling with cash flow, compliance and tax paperwork. Yet there is a silver lining. Government-backed funding programmes like SEIS and EIS deliver powerful tax relief for early-stage ventures. If you’re searching for reliable business finance solutions to support growth, you’re in the right place.

We break down how SEIS and EIS work, why Oriel IPO’s commission-free platform leads the way, and the practical steps you need to claim maximum relief. Ready to transform your funding journey with cutting-edge business finance solutions? Revolutionising business finance solutions in the UK

Understanding SEIS: The Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme

The Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) is designed for very new companies. It offers investors generous tax relief and startups a boost in early capital. Alongside other business finance solutions, SEIS can make or break your first funding round.

What Is SEIS?

SEIS helps small UK startups attract equity investment by offering:

  • 50% income tax relief on investments up to £100,000
  • Capital gains reinvestment relief
  • Loss relief on shares that underperform

These incentives reduce risk for angel investors and improve your access to vital seed-stage capital.

Key Benefits for Investors and Startups

SEIS stands out among business finance solutions because:

  • It makes early-stage investing more appealing
  • It supports innovative ideas in tech, health and creative sectors
  • It fast-tracks confidence for investors seeking tax-efficient options

Diving into EIS: Enterprise Investment Scheme

The Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) extends benefits to slightly larger SMEs. It picks up where SEIS ends, backing growth beyond the earliest stages and remaining one of the top business finance solutions for scaling companies.

EIS Overview

EIS enables companies to raise up to £5 million per year (and £12 million in total) by offering:

  • 30% income tax relief on eligible investments
  • Capital gains deferral for reinvested profits
  • Loss relief for underperforming shares

It also includes inheritance tax relief on qualifying shares held for two years.

Advantages for Early-Stage Businesses

Thanks to EIS, you can:

  • Secure substantial funding for product development
  • Retain more equity while rewarding investors
  • Boost valuation through structured growth plans
